Over the summer of 2021, I discovered a barred owl roost with hundreds of intact owl pellets below it. I instantly became fascinated with the bones, and began a second research project on barred owl diet across urban Seattle. I've collected, dissected, and identified the bones in over 650 owl pellets so far and am excited to begin processing results.
One of the most exciting parts of this project has been observing barred owls. All of the pictures below are of two owls on UW campus. One owl, Hooty, has lived on campus and has been visible almost daily since 2021. Cutie, a new mate, arrived in February 2023, and it has been incredible to watch the pair!
