Honors 100 Autumn Quarter Reflection
Since the beginning of Autumn quarter, I have become much more adjusted to life at UW. I am now comfortable finding my way around campus and using the wide variety of resources available to me. I have discovered how useful studying in groups can be, and have formed study groups in my classes so we can work through difficult assignments together and build on one another's ideas.
One of the papers I wrote this quarter required me to write using Chicago Style citations, which I had never done before. After trying my best to figure it out by myself, I went to the CLUE Writing Lab for the first time. I’m so glad I discovered how helpful it is this early on in my time at UW. The tutors were very professional and knowledgeable, and I felt a lot less alone in my schooling. I definitely intend to go back and use the resources offered to me at CLUE in the future, and I have already recommended it to several friends who have also found it helpful. In the end, I got a 95% on that essay and was very proud of how hard I worked on the assignment.
I have been a member of two different clubs this first quarter at UW that have really helped me build a community and find a group of people I look forward to being with. Gal Palz has helped me find a group of other queer students that know the struggles that go along with being a queer college student. It is a very supportive group that always makes me laugh. Through that group, I have learned about things I otherwise would not have and met a lot of people I would not have come across in other aspects of my life at UW. I have also really enjoyed being a member of Calligraphy and Handlettering Society. Crafting and creating art is something that I am always doing. I constantly making origami out of receipts or doodling with rainbow pens. When I have free time, I work on my bigger projects. Having CHS has enabled me to work on my projects and relax with my art while meeting a lovely group of people. I always look forward to evenings with CHS. The people in the club are very kind and the officers are extremely dedicated to making the club run smoothly. I loved making and selling cards and wish-bottles. I especially enjoyed tabling at the Maker’s Fair. I intend to continue to be a member of both clubs throughout my time at UW. Next quarter I am hoping to also become a part of Huskies for Kids and the UW Mountain Biking Club.
Living on campus is my first time living in a city, and it has helped me solidify what is important to me. I love being outside in nature, and I miss that living here. I often go on bike rides to as many nature spots as I can find, and I love the arboretum, but I definitely want to continue studying Environmental Science and spend a lot of my life exploring outdoors. I have also realized how much energy I gain from being around animals, pets, and small children. I miss seeing wild animals, taking care of my pets, and being a camp counselor for young children. Being at UW has also helped me realize how unique my art skills are, and also how much I rely on them to calm myself.
I am very passionate about Environmental Science, and I am so excited to continue along that path. My first quarter at UW has only enforced my love for wildlife conservation and my wish to study abroad, and I am so glad to have those opportunities.
